Thanks, Jennifer. It carried me along as I wrote it, and I'm glad you found it enjoyable.

Hasmita, thanks for your input. As I said in response to Jim above, I was limited in the number of words I was allowed. Perhaps I'll expand the tale someday. Until then, I suppose it doesn't really matter about the back story; it was the immediacy of the moment, the thoughts and feelings of the character, and his own transformation that I was focused upon.

Regarding the reason that he will be singing more songs...well, I had my reasons for that ending, but I'll leave it open for critical analysis for now.

Again, I appreciate the feedback.

Thanks for the support, Jim, and for the comments. I'm glad you liked the story. As for the rest, well, I was limited to 1,000 words, and I felt it was most important to focus on Edward and the immediacy of the moment. I, too, often like to know background details of the stories I read, but I'm not sure that a lot of detail is called for in this case. I think that the fact that they're fighting with swords places it in the past, before the development of gunpowder (or at least before its use became widespread). As for the whys and wherefores of Edward's foe and his father's death...I'll leave that up to the imagination. Don't worry about being right or wrong.
