Hello Everyone,

I am pleased to invite you all to this year's launch of The Best of Every Day Fiction Two. We will be hosting it right here in Vancouver, Canada.

On January 30, 2010 Every Day Fiction will be proud to present a ticketed lunch and round table discussion on flash fiction at the beautiful Kingston Tap House and Grill (www.kingstontaphouse.com), details and ticket information to come.

Later that afternoon Every Day Fiction also would like to extend a warm invitation to our launch of The Best of Every Day Fiction Two. This event will be held at the very cozy Cedar Cottage Coffee House located at 1303 Kingsway Vancouver B.C. The evening will begin around 4pm and continue on to around 8pm. The launch will include a book signing, readings, and the anthology will be available for purchase!

As the evening rolls on into the night, an after party is planned to commence back at the Kingston Tap House and Grill.

We here at Every Day Fiction would absolutely love it if you can attend! We have made contact with The Kingston Hotel (www.kingstonhotelvancouver.com) about accommodation for this event. Please feel free to consult the website and make a booking. Rooms are available at quite an economical rate!

Thank you again for your support, and if there are any questions please feel free to contact me at kevin@everydayfiction.com.

More details will be coming shortly about this event, but please keep Saturday January 30, 2010 in your minds! We hope to see you all there!

Best Regards

Kevin Young

I'm hoping to come.  Anyone else?  It was so much fun last year... Should be the same this year and more!

I'm thinking about it. It'll depend on how much I can get a plane ticket for. I suppose I'll need a passport as well, right?

I'm hoping to go.  And you do need a passport, Alex.  Of course, even then there's no guarantee.  Kevin and I thought they were going to disappear us last year.  We sat at the border for over an hour.  Those Canadians are tough cookies.  Grin

I'm just waiting for tim to get home from a business trip to chat about whether he plans on going or not.  I'll go either way I think, but his going will change the how.  As for getting in and out of Canada, my son and I went over the border into quebec and it was a cake walk.  Of course we had passports.  I think Vancouver is tougher though.  KC mentioned the train.  If Tim doesn't go I think I'll stay in Seattle with friends and head up with KC.

Alex!  If you could pull this off it would be sooooo cool.  Hoping Kevin will come again.  The big get for me would be Michael and Sarah.  That would be soo cool but coooooosttttlllly.

  • Round trip via Amtrak, Seattle to Vancouver to Seattle -- $70
  • Two night stay at the Kingston Hotel -- $170
  • Participating in the Best of Every Day Fiction 2 book launch -- priceless

I just had a thunderbolt hit.

How cool would it be to set up a big-screen television, computer and video camera at the book launch site and have Every Day Fiction writers from all over (with a computer and camera at their end) check in via Skype?  The software is a free download, there's no charge if it goes through a computer at both ends and there would be two-way communication.  It would just be a question of jumping from person to person via scheduling.

I'll volunteer to handle scheduling to get contacts set up before the event.  It's not the same as being there, but it would be a whale of a lot less expensive for those folks who are far away and it would let a lot more people participate.

What do you say, Kevin?  Is it doable?

Oh, there's a train from Seattle to Vancouver? That could work. It seems to be way cheaper to fly to Seattle than straight into Canada.

I'm hoping to go up Friday night (Jan 29), so I can have all day Saturday for the two events.  A northbound Amtrak leaves Seattle at 4:45 p.m. and arrives in Vancouver at 8:00 p.m.

If you could get here Friday afternoon, Alex, we could all ride up together.

I have done the Seattle-Vancouver train and I love it. Best way to make the trip, in my opinion; you get big comfy recliner seats and a café/snack car. BUT... you've got to be really careful with booking because on the Amtrak site a "Reserved Coach Seat" means a train but a "Reserved Thruway Seat" means a BUS!!! Yes, do you really want to spend 4 hours on a bus? You want to be on the Cascades train, which leaves Seattle daily at 7:40 AM and 6:50 PM – all the other departures are buses. Just so you know. I have made this mistake. (Going back the other way, you want to be on the Cascades train again, and it leaves Vancouver daily at 6:40 AM and 5:45 PM.) Oh, and upgrade to business class if you want an AC outlet to plug your laptop in; you could have 4 hours of uninterrupted writing time! The border is not a big deal, as long as you've got your passport, you just show it before getting on the train (same as with travelling by air).

I don't know much about Skype but we'll look into that for sure. The trickiest part would be obtaining the A/V equipment, I think.

Anyway, I am soooo excited about this, it's going to be even better than last year. Oh, and Two is going to be a tiny bit longer – 316 pages to last year's 294 – you heard it here first!

Vancouver is going to be too far for this east coast guy, though the launch sounds like a hoot.  I like the Skype idea though.
