Nominate stories for the anthology!
«
on:
July 16, 2008, 01:21:05 AM »
As the end of our first year approaches (September 1st is our "birthday"!), we are starting the difficult process of compiling a list of stories for inclusion in our planned "Best of Every Day Fiction" anthology. We wish that we could include all the stories, but that would make for a gi-normous, unwieldy, dictionary-sized tome—not at all reader-friendly—and thus we are forced to make some hard choices.
The selection process is an editorial one (unlike our top stories lists, which are automated), though we are naturally influenced by star ratings and comments since they reflect readers' opinions. And now... you also have an opportunity to influence us directly... by nominating your favourite stories of the year right here in this thread!
What stories should we absolutely without fail include in our antho? Nominate them now!

Okay. I couldn't sleep so I've tried to find all the stories I really like to see in the anthologies. Apologies to any one I may have inadvertently forgotten. My three (One Question, The Breach, and Sring Melt), of course, just because, well, I'd be totally jazzed! And here are the rest in no particular order. I think I counted 45 favorites. Room for lots more!
Without Napier Michael Ehart
One Bright Morning by Joel Willans (note: see the pay-off of getting interviewed? People remember your name!)
Larry Legend by Jason Stout (ditto)
Show Me Brave and Haven and Emergency Revival by Kevin Shamel
Someone Else's Slip and Lolita's Lynch Mob and The Facts as We Know Them by Sarah Hillary
Alone by Mark Dallinger
A Salute to the Old and Crotchety by Madeline Mora-Summonte
Missy's Summer and The Heron by Oona V Joslin and just about anything else
Yardie Girl by Celeste Goscher
Snow and Silence by Precie A Schroyer
Philosopher in the Dark by SM Sandridge
Wing Mending by David Mac Pherson
Cavedweller 2.0 by Greg Likins
Catherine by Joseph Riippi
Go Away by Tania Hershman
Peter and Sid by Rena Sherwood
Because We Can by Jasmine Pahl
The Weald Maiden's Will by N.I.Hawkins
Conversation, 9:04 by Jennifer Tatroe
Burying Sam by CJ Gardner
Aftershocks and Crush by Alex Burns
Socks and Banshees by Jens Rushing
The Man Who was Stuck by Frank Roger
Objectiv-Eye by Matthew Strada
The Watered Down Version by Angela Carlton
Tears in a Box by DJ Barber
Photocopies by Pam Tartaglio
Don't Forget the Sun by John Woodington
I Take it Back by John Ritchie
Good News, Bad News by Patrick Parr
Monochrome by Steve Goble
Nancy in her Swing by Harold Walters
Uncle Lester had a Hammer by Nicholas Ozment
Winding Down to Retirement by Bill West
Remember by Erin M Kinch
Mars Ascent by Andrew Males

Gay, thanks so much for including one of my stories on your list! I would LOVE to be included in the anthology.
Camille - Ack, how are you going to pick and choose?! Off the top of my head and stealing off Gay's list, some of my favorites were:
THE BREACH
SPRING MELT
WITHOUT NAPIER
LARRY LEGEND
SOMEONE ELSE'S SLIP
THE HERON
YARDIE GIRL
WING MENDING
CAVEDWELLER
OBJECTIV-EYE
NANCY IN HER SWING
FORBIDDEN PLANET
Plus the three of mine - the next one to be out the end of this month.
And I'm sure I'm missing some others, too. But short of going back and re-reading them all, I'm at a loss...
Will it be in print or online or both?

Without Napier Michael Ehart
Socks and Banshees by Jens Rushing
Remember by Erin M Kinch
Brimstone and Liars by Stephanie Scarborough
The Breach and One Question by Gay Degani
These immediately come to mind, and I'd love to see my own Aftershocks in there (thanks Gay!).
As soon as the Authors page is back online I'll start going through some of my favorites and come up with more. I'm blanking on titles at the moment.

I also wanted to add the story told from the piano's pov, where it ends up back with the daughter of the original owner... I can't think of the title or the author (sorry!) and I can't seem to be able to pull up the pages and search for it... I believe it was published in June...

The ones that have stuck with me (and there are a lot of great work, but these were just killer)
Without Napier
Resolution
Aftershocks
Lolita's Lynch Mob
those are just four out of many worthy works, these were the four (and another whose name I can't recall, the one with the werewolf getting a shave in the old west,) that I can think of without delving deep into the site's archives. It have been a great year of reading.

Thanks, Gay, for including
Tears In a Box
on your list of really great stories for the anthology.
I'll be a bit selfish and include my stories, Tears in a Box, War is Over, and The First Fourth, along with:
The Breach
We
Without Napier--
BTW--Michael and I both have a short story in Ron Shiflet's anthology Damned in Dixie at Lulu.com--mine is called: The Cootsy
.
Spring Melt
The Watered Down Version
Monochrome
Mars Ascent
The Heron
I know I've missed others and will go back when the authors page is up and add some more goodies.

Also, to let everyone know, my story Smoke Rings was recently accepted for publication here at EDF--I suppose for an August date--and I hope it gets consideration for the anthology.

Took a quick look through the Author's Pages and have a few more suggestions for the antho:
The Brave
The End
Behind the Curtain
The Hero and the Horror
The Mixture
Larry Legend
A Shiny New Andrew
One Snapshot from the Singularity
A Hero for Bobo
The Storm
Looking forward to the final outcome and glad I don't have to decide what to pick--so many good things will miss out.
Vol. II to follow???

Please add K.C. Ball's
The Mixture
to my list below. A well-told tale. Very lyrical and fun to read. Deserves to be in the anthology for sure.

Oh no, I hope I'm not too late!
I checked my outgoing mail to find out which ones I'd forwarded, as it seemed a good way to choose favourites:
http://www.everydayfiction.com/mugs-game-by-sarah-hilary/
http://www.everydayfiction.com/epiphany-sale-by-kj-kabza/

http://www.everydayfiction.com/to-save-the-disco-by-kevin-shamel/
http://www.everydayfiction.com/the-objectiv-eye-by-matthew-strada/
and obviously I am in favour of the votes for Listen and The Storm - wow! Thanks

No, you're not too late. Our list won't be finalized until after all of August's stories have been published (wouldn't be fair otherwise!). We are still very much open to nominations and reader input.
