I guess I like the viewpoint of the holiday, especially intriguing for those outside of the UK who don't know it.

It's lovely as that: an explanation of tradition. I'll point people here next time I want to explain about Guy Fawkes, it's a lovely piece of the overall. But I'm not sure it's a story.

Well, I liked it. The historical aspects of holidays are always open to the interpretations of the masses - so historical accuracy doesn't mean anything when in the context of family tradition. I think that part is pretty clear in how Peter has been taught - and taught his own children - about the tradition.

I like the shift to the present - it keeps the piece from going into saccharine territory and gives it a continuity to the present. Golden childhood memories can get too Dickensian if allowed to end in the past.

Great story about family tradition and what gets passed down, the comforting with the dangerous, the joyful with the inexplicable.

A very nice evocation of time and place in Peter's youth - I felt his excitement. However, the transition to adulthood was a little abrupt, which took me out of the story, and the end seemed a little hurried - it just sort of "petered out".
