This was a powerful story, with much emotion and pain, but the relationships of the characters were confusing to me. Who is the main woman, the narrator, what has she come here to escape? Why is Tess not with Andrew, if she loves him so much wouldn't she visit him? Maybe she has and she has come here after that?

Really intense and beautiful. The attention to detail is amazing. It's like a tiny perfect diamond of a story -- there is so much to see, so much sharpness and color, in this one small space. It's the kind of story that makes me want to look at the world all over again... see what I missed!

Wonderful. Just read Anita Shreve, your writing reminds me of her. Sensitive. Tension. Flowing.
