You've brought the wider question of morality in warfare down to a human level. This is a terrifying scenario. The way you use three paragraphs beginning "P.B" demonstrates how close you are to this character, which somehow makes his end even more upsetting, if that's possible. There's anger in the story, too, though it doesn't confict with the art of it. This story almost unbearably makes its point.
