I particularly enjoyed the way nothing worked out exactly as the narrator expected. The ending made me wonder whether “a hundred pounds of moldy mashed potatoes, and ten gallons of marinara” would really produce what the narrator had in mind.

I also think it’s interesting that everyone has assumed that the narrator is a man. I did too, of course, but I just read it again looking for gender clues…

Merriam-Webster Online is OK with “miniscule.” Oxford American Dictionary of Current Usage does not include it, but cites it as an improper spelling of “minuscule” in the listing for that word. Webster’s includes “miniscule” as a separate listing, but defines it as an “erroneous spelling of minuscule.” The Associated Press Stylebook comes down on the side of “minuscule.”

So, I hope this helps clear things up …

Miniscule? That’s one of the test words budding journalists are given. And what the heck is the Free Dictionary?! The Columbia Guide to American Usage is the only one I can find that calls this a variant; others call it misspelling. Sorry, but Mr. Brogan in 12th grade took off one point for every misspelling in our papers and I was traumatized.
