Kate,

You blew away the audience at the San Dimas Library on Saturday when you read "Veterans" and rightly so. Well conceived and well written. Most importantly though, you remind us that war isn't just about that moment on the battlefield, but how that moment continues to haunt those who serve.

The role reversal was a great twist but the fact that her husband wanted to celebrate her on Veterans Day by having dinner with the kids really did it for me!

It would be nice if we never had to go to war. It would be even better if we only did it for the right reasons. Only time and history will tell if our battles were necessary.

To me the fact that most of the people we fought are now allies or friends or at least economic partners means something.

Great story-- an dthanks for it.

Well done Kate, a very believeable excerpt from her life. I liked the touch of her husband trying to protect her. Keep on writing.

This was powerful, and the reversal of the traditional roles made it modern and compelling.

"whipping up children’s toys and the smell of burned bodies. The blinding heat and noise passed over her face and she was gone for a few minutes."

Very nice Kate. War is truly hell - a place where the perpetrator and victim both suffer in the end.

What a nice surprise that she wasn't the spouse at home. I was sure it was going to be that she'd slept around while he was away. A much more interesting story this way. It's very powerful in the few comments, the inference without the blunt description of gore. And how he still tries to protect her against even her own memories. Nice
