		<description>The action in the story isn't trivial in my mind because it shows the uncertainty of the main character. He suffers as a result of something far outside of his control, manages to escape death temporarily only to find he has no idea what to do or where to go, then meets his inevitable end. His only consolation? He won't be alone in dying.
I did stumble on "battened down tight," though.
As to why the goblins might soon become a memory, I think "mere decades" above was meant rather loosely and that the goblins can be interpreted as marauding barbarians or vikings or invading soldiers from some army no longer in existence.</description>
